The Things Network: building an open and free Internet of Things network

Since 2015, the community of The Things Network is building a global, free and open network for the Internet of Things based on LoRaWAN technology. Today, The Things Network is active in more than 400 cities across 84 countries and there are thousands of users worldwide contributing to consolidate the notion that open network infrastructure can be trusted just as much as we trust open source software. Open Source has won: nowadays most of the internet runs on top of open source software and we trust it on devices big and small for everyday computing. We’ve come a long way in building trust into open source software, but the landscape was very different a couple of decades ago. This trust in open source has created room for open models to spread to other areas such as Open Source Hardware, Open Data, Open Access, and more recently Open Networks.

Community basiertes Drahtlosnetzwerk für das Internet der Dinge professionell nutzen?

Im August 2015 installierte das Team rund um Wienke Giezman innerhalb von 6 Wochen in Amsterdam ein frei zugängliches drahtloses Internet der Dinge basierend auf der LoRaWAN Technologie. Seit dann macht „The Things Network“ weltweit Schule und verbreitet sich in Windeseile über den ganzen Globus. Über 18‘000 Mitglieder haben sich in mehr als 400 communities organisiert und betreiben zusammen über 1400 Gateways. Ein Telekommunikationsnetzwerk das organisch und bedarfsgerecht wächst. Ein ideales Tummelfeld für Tüftler, Macher, Hacker und Startupfirmen, denn der Einstieg ist einfach und günstig.

Wir stellen uns der Frage, in wie weit ein solches Community basiertes Netzwerk nicht auch einer professionellen Nutzung dienen könnte. Welche Hürden dabei überwunden werden müssen und welche Chancen ein solcher Ansatz gegenüber der gängigen Praxis kommerzieller Netzwerke mit sich bringen kann.
